About Uplands Sixth Form
Uplands Sixth Form provides a holistic programme of study for young people with a range of learning, communication, physical, sensory and social difficulties. We aim to provide challenging, relevant and fun learning experiences which support individual progression and of vital importance; prepares them for adulthood.
The 6th form programme provides stretch and progression and enables them to achieve the best possible outcomes in adult life. They are expected to progress to a higher level, acquire qualifications, study English and Maths, if below level two, and participate in meaningful work experience and non-qualification activity. In addition they are expected to grow as a person, through spiritual, moral, social and cultural education and learn about democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith .
At Uplands we promise to use every learning method, every resource, all our external networks and every ounce of professional support to ensure students achieve as far as possible in their life outcomes.
The sixth form has a history of providing person centred programmes, pathways and provisions and is also committed to working with students and their families to establish appropriate progression routes when students leave and has done so year on year.
Opportunities to gain external exams/accreditation:At Uplands our students have opportunities to gain high quality nationally recognised qualifications and awards which support the development of independence. These include the OCR Live and Living Qualifications, externally assessed literacy and numeracy qualifications (Cambridge Progression Units), ASDAN Towards Independence Awards, ASDAN Bronze Awards, various vocational units Qualifications are available at Entry 1 level to Level two. These are more fully explained in the Sixth Form Overview document below.
Alternatively, students may follow a bespoke package towards individually chosen qualifications.
Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Examinations: Life and Living Skills: This is a credit based qualification from the Qualifications and Credit Framework that develops skills, knowledge and understanding. This qualification, which is divided into units, has been designed to encourage progression through its own structure. Students may progress upwards or laterally through the accumulation of units in a broad range of life and learning areas. The qualification is very flexible and students who have spikey profiles may, through the rules of combination achieve an overall level through taking units at different levels.
BTEC Workskills: BTECs are work-related qualifications for learners taking their first steps into employment, progressing through their careers.
Individual programmes linked to GCSEs
Gateway Bitesize Literacy and Numeracy Qualifications: These qualifications are ideal as they break the content of curriculum down into small, coherent units with assessment that is flexible, robust and will help motivate the learners to progress towards Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications. Learners take highly personalised progression routes and can study and complete units at their own pace - an approach that can transform outcomes.
ASDAN Towards Independence Award: Towards Independence offers formal recognition for small steps of achievement towards a larger goal. Modules can be used separately and accumulated to build a record of personal achievement.
Bronze Arts Award: This is available to accredit learning in the area of Creative Arts.
Spiritual, Moral, Social Cultural Education is an important part of personal development and students have opportunities to gain qualifications in this area through both OCR and ASDAN.(see Life and Living Skills Handbook for units available).
