Uplands School rated OUTSTANDING by Ofsted

Yesterday, Uplands school, a secondary special school for students with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties, received its Ofsted judgement following a visit from Ofsted inspectors in July. The school was over the moon to learn that it has been rated outstanding in all Ofsted categories.

Commenting on the happy and welcoming atmosphere within the school, the Ofsted report noted that students, motivated by the high expectations of staff, made exceptional and rapid progress. The report described the school as being exceptionally well led with strongly motivated staff who were greatly ambitious for the students to succeed. In addition it found student behaviour to be outstanding.

When the inspectors asked the students what could make the school better the students replied, 'more lessons!'

MP and parent Robert Buckland contacted the school to congratulate the staff and students of Uplands on their Outstanding Ofsted report. Robert, whose daughter started at Uplands this September, said she was thrilled to be joining Uplands School.

Jackie Smith, the Executive Headteacher, was exuberant in her praise for staff saying that our students and families deserve the best and they get it. When asked what made Uplands special she was keen to point out that the school was determined to meet the individual needs of all students and support families wherever possible. Mrs Smith stated that, 'we try to have a 'can do' attitude and go above and beyond for our students and their families - we adapt to meet the needs of our students A few years ago we created Uplands Educational Trust, a charity that has enabled us to further support the students and their families. We have acquired shops to give students work experience, run a farm to cater for different interests and skills and this summer ran summer clubs to enable students to meet up with friends and provide parents with well earned breaks. One of the reasons we are outstanding is because we will always strive to improve and we acknowledge we need support to do so. Our single improvement target is to develop stronger links with businesses and firms in the community to widen opportunities for work related learning. If you would like to help Uplands school either as a business providing work related opportunities or through volunteering or providing much needed resources, please contact the school at admin@uplands.swindon.sch.uk or ring 01793 493910
